Σκηνοθέτες – ταινίες

Στην επιλογή των 500 ταινιών  που ακολουθεί, επιχειρείται να δοθεί μία  αντιπροσωπευτική εικόνα του παγκόσμιου κινηματογράφου από τις πρώτες ταινίες των αδελφών Lumiere το 1895, μέχρι το Drive my car, του 2021-2022. Ο κατάλογος  αποτελεί μία αρχική  βασική ταινιοθήκη, η οποία μπορεί να επεκταθεί ανάλογα με τις προτιμήσεις του καθενός. Η λογική της σύνταξής του ήταν να είναι κατά το δυνατόν πλατύτερος στον χώρο και τον χρόνο, περιλαμβάνοντας σκηνοθέτες από αρκετές χώρες και όπως προείπαμε, από τα πρώτα βήματα μέχρι σήμερα. Επικεντρώνεται επίσης σε αυτό που συνηθίζεται να ονομάζεται «Κινηματογράφος των δημιουργών», χωρίς να λείπουν και αρκετές άλλες ταινίες που έχουν την δική τους ιστορία ή δημοφιλία.  Όλες είναι από επιεικώς καλές έως αριστουργήματα, με προσπάθεια να μην υπάρχουν κακές ή αδιάφορες.

Τέλος, μία άλλη παραδοχή είναι, οι πολύ μεγάλοι σκηνοθέτες να αντιπροσωπεύονται με μέχρι 8 ταινίες (με τον αναγκαστικό αποκλεισμό  και άλλων εξαιρετικών), οι αρκετά σημαντικοί έως 5 και οι υπόλοιποι από 1 έως 3, ώστε να «χωρέσουν» όσον το δυνατόν περισσότεροι.
